LITTLE LULU POWERPOINT SHOW AT MELVIN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Kids on Paper visited the students at Melvin Elementary School in Reseda on Thursday, June 2nd, in collaboration with the KYDS Inc. (Keep Youth Doing Something) afterschool program. Julie Brown, the wonderful director of KYDS Inc., lent Kids On Paper a helping hand by coordinating and emceeing the show.
The show featured John Stanley's Little Lulu comics from the 1950's. Kids in the audience were chosen to read the dialogue balloons on the screen and act out the roles of Lulu, Tubby, Iggy, Alvin, and other characters. The kids performed beautifully and had a great time. The two stories we read from were "The Visitors" and "The Flying Carpet".

After the show, there was a Q&A session about comics, drawing and animation. Students asked Kids On Paper director Gary Cifra if he was the artist who drew Little Lulu, and Gary told them it was John Stanley. Still, after the show, the kids lined up to get Gary's autograph (!). As a former professional screenwriter who had never been produced, Gary was greatly flattered and honored to sign autographs for the kids. Next time he'll remember to bring a few Sharpies so he won't run out of autograph ink! One inspired, talented student named Amanda Wu drew cartoons of Gary and his wife, Assistant Director Patty, on the spot that day. You can see Amanda's drawing posted below. Interestingly, Amanda drew Gary without his wheelchair, which we thought was kinda neat!
